Laser eye surgery is known by a couple of names to include LASIK, refractive eye surgery, and LASIX, which is the acronym for laser assisted in situ keratomileusis.

Once the slit is made, the flap is folded back, allowing the doctor to remove some of the corneal tissue.
The excimer laser is designed to work with a cool ultraviolet light beam to help reshape the cornea. Once the cornea is changed, the eye can work better with focusing light. The result is crisp, clear vision. To complete the surgery, the surgeon replaces the flap. The wonderful thing about laser eye surgery is that it can be highly beneficial for both near and farsighted people.
Now, if you have nearsightedness, the surgeon would flatten the cornea, which tends to be too steep. However, if you are farsighted, the goal is making the cornea steeper. Additionally, LASIX can correct astigmatism simply by taking an irregularly shaped cornea and smoothing it out. In all cases, vision is greatly improved. Sometimes, surgeons will slightly under correct a person with nearsightedness since as we age our eyes become more farsighted, making vision eventually near perfect.

The most important thing with laser eye surgery is to choose a board certified and reputable surgeon. Once a doctor has been chosen, you would meet with him or her for a consultation and some testing. This will tell him/her the type of eye correction surgery you need. The doctor will also make sure you do not have any type of eye disease or something else that could make you a poor candidate for the surgery.
Depending on your doctor, you would go to an eye surgery clinic or the hospital where the procedure would be performed. In most cases, a mild sedative is given such a valium.
